Selecting Thesis vs. Non-Thesis Option
Thesis: Students in the thesis option conduct research on a problem or issue related to their area of study. The focus of the research varies depending on the student’s interests. The project assists the student in developing critical, conceptual, and analytical skills through the thesis research investigative and writing process. A final article suitable for publication is recommended. The student must defend the thesis for the faculty committee.
Non-Thesis: Students in the non-thesis option must successfully pass an oral and a written comprehensive exam after all classwork has been completed. Questions for the exams are developed by the student’s faculty committee. On campus students will schedule with their committee to sit for the exams. For online students, written exams will be given online through ProctorU, submission of essays as directed by the committee, or other written communication mode approved by the committee and the graduate coordinator. Oral exams will be given via Skype, Zoom or similar online communications tool.
